چکیده

We analyze the performance of trellis-coded pulseposition modulation (PPM) on indoor, wireless infrared channels. We show that maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) of trellis-coded PPM is very effective in mitigating the multipath dispersion on such channels. We present code search results for high constraint-length, rate-2/3, 8-PPM and rate-3/4, 16PPM codes. We provide bit-error rate curves and intersymbol interference power-penalties for MLSD of PPM with these codes, evaluated on ceiling-bounce channel models with delay spread per bit duration ratios of 0.01–0.3. Finally, we present Monte Carlo simulation results to verify our analysis.

Coding and equalization for PPM on wireless infrared channels

We analyze the performance of trellis-coded pulseposition modulation with block decision-feedback equalization (BDFE) and parallel decision-feedback decoding (PDFD) on indoor, wireless infrared channels. We show that the reduced complexities of BDFE and PDFD as compared to maximum-likelihood sequence detection allow for better codes whose increased coding gain more than compensates for the pena...

Coded Modulation for the Deep-Space Optical Channel: Serially Concatenated Pulse-Position Modulation

We present an error-control coding technique for optical communications. It consists of the serial concatenation of an outer convolutional code, an interleaver, a bit-accumulator, and pulse-position modulation (PPM). We refer to the coded modulation as serially concatenated PPM, or SCPPM. The encoding is accomplished with simple shift register operations and a table look-up to map code bits to ...

Antenna-sector time-division multiple access for broadband indoor wireless systems

This paper investigates a hybrid space–time-division multiple access (S-TDMA) for broadband indoor wireless systems using sectored antennas. It is shown that portables which are located in different sectors of an indoor microcell may be able to reuse the same frequency and the same time slot. However, this requires careful scheduling of packet transmissions in order to avoid transmitting packet...

Trellis-coded CPFSK and soft-decision feedback equalization for micro-cellular wireless applications

In this paper, trellis-coded M-ary CPFSK with noncoherent envelope detection and adaptive channel equalization are investigated to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of microcellular digital wireless communications systems. For the same spectral efficiency, the trellis-coded modulation (TCM) schemes studied outperform minimum shift keying (MSK) with noncoherent or differentially coher...
